Hair & Scalp routine, step by step

Do these in order. Skip nothing on your first routine — you can add fancier steps once the basics are a habit.

  1. 1

    Cleanse (Medicated Shampoo)

2–3 times a week to start; you can alternate with your regular shampoo.
    What it is:
For scalp issues, a medicated shampoo — antifungal (ketoconazole, zinc), or tar/salicylic for flaking and plaques — is both the wash and the treatment.
    Why you do it:
Dandruff, seb-derm, and scalp psoriasis are driven by yeast and buildup. The right active shampoo calms the cause, not just the flakes.
    Goal:
Massage into the scalp (not just the hair) and leave it on 3–5 minutes before rinsing — that contact time is what works.

  2. 2

    Treat (Scalp Care)

    On non-wash days.
    What it is:
A leave-on scalp serum or soothing treatment between washes, if needed.
    Why you do it:
Helps with lingering itch or dryness that shampoo alone doesn't fully settle.
    Goal:
Optional — start with the medicated shampoo and add this only if your scalp still bothers you.
