Body routine, step by step

Do these in order. Skip nothing on your first routine — you can add fancier steps once the basics are a habit.

  1. 1

    Cleanse

In the shower. Daily is fine; every other day is plenty if your skin is dry.
    What it is:
A body wash or bar to clean skin without stripping it.
    Why you do it:
Starting clean lets everything after it actually absorb and work — and stops buildup that leads to breakouts and dullness.
    Goal:
Skip harsh, heavily-fragranced washes if your skin is dry or itchy — they make it worse.

  2. 2

    Treat

    Usually at night, after showering.
    What it is:
A targeted cream or lotion — exfoliating acids for rough/bumpy skin, urea or tar for scaly conditions.
    Why you do it:
This is where real change happens: clearing acne, calming a condition, fading dark spots, smoothing texture.
    Goal:
Apply to the specific patches that need it, not your whole body.

  3. 3

    Moisturize

After every shower, and again if skin feels dry.
    What it is:
A body lotion or cream — richer than face products since body skin is tougher and drier.
    Why you do it:
Body skin loses moisture fast, especially after a shower. Locking it in prevents the tight, itchy, flaky feeling.
    Goal:
Apply within a few minutes of toweling off, while skin is still slightly damp.

  4. 4

    Protect (SPF)

Morning only — it's your last step.
    What it is:
Sunscreen on any skin that's exposed — arms, chest, the backs of your hands.
    Why you do it:
Sun is the number-one cause of aging, dark spots, and many flare-ups. It's the highest-payoff step in any routine — full stop.
    Goal:
Easy to forget on the body. Hands and chest show sun damage early, so don't skip them.
